Annotations for Sophie isaacs lifeboat

Lyric: Everyone’s pushing
 Everyone’s fighting
Annotation:
This is both in a literal and metaphorical sense. As this is highschool, there are probably a lot of jostling and fights going on, with only the important ones being acknowledged in the musical (with good reason; we don’t want to hear about every little fight that goes on in Westerberg’s imaginary filler crowd). Also, considering that this song seems to be about the troubles of staying afloat (heh) in the popularity hierarchy, it can be assumed that the people at the top of the popularity food chain are constantly ‘pushing and fighting’ for dominance after Heather C.’s death. It can also be noted that there are also ‘fights’ of some sort going on that Heather McNamara has no way of knowing about, like the murders of Heather C., Kurt, and Ram, the incoming breakup of Veronica and J.D., and the bomb threat that will be brought on by J.D.. Heck, Veronica and J.D. ended up together in the first place because she saw him fighting and said the most beautiful ‘damn’ anyone has ever heard! This line, though Heather M. doesn’t know it, is a good analysis of a lot of the happenings in Westerberg.

Lyric: With people I know
Annotation:
Here we see McNamara admitting that the Heathers' and the popular people aren’t really her friends, as she refers to them ‘as people she knows’ in lieu of calling them her friends.

Lyric: And the captain is pointing
 Well, who made her captain?
Annotation:
this talks about how heather duke took over for chandelier after she died.
